Storage Terms


The following are terms often used in self-storage facilities:

Drive-up: units that can be accessed directly from the secure roadway. These units allow you to load and unload your goods directly from your vehicle.

Roll-up Door: Like a garage door, it rolls up.

Swing Door: Opens like a bedroom or closet door.

Office Hours: Hours of operation where front office staff are available for consultation, payment and rental questions.

Gate Hours: Hours of access to units. Usually longer than office hours. May vary for inside versus outside units.

Gate Coded Access: The entryway device to permit and record the entrance of vehicles to the facility and match to unit door entry activity. If a door is opened without a corresponding gate code entry, an alarm will sound.

Dollies and Push Carts: Rolling stock usually provided to assist in moving goods from the loading area to your unit.

Dish Boxes: Designed to carry fragile items such as china and stemware.

Wardrobe Boxes: Taller boxes with a bar designed to hold hanging clothes and drapes.

Small or Book Boxes: Small boxes designed to carry heavier compact items, like books.

Medium Boxes: Larger than book boxes, useful for bedding, toys, lampshades.

Large Boxes: Larger than medium boxes, designed for blankets, bedding, pillows.

File or Banker's Boxes: Used for files, records and office supplies. About the size of a small box, but with a removable lid.

Mirror or Picture Boxes: Narrow and tall boxes used to carry framed art and mirrors.
