Packing and Storage Tips: BOX SELECTION

Helpful hints to ensure the safe packing and storage of your belongings:

  • Small Boxes for heavier items such as books, canned goods and tools. Also good for contents of drawers in desks, bathrooms and kitchens. Pack books flat to avoid damage to spines.
  • Medium Boxes for photo albums, smaller kitchen appliances, and shoes.
  • Large Boxes for comforters, clothes, toys, and awkward or bulky items.
  • Wardrobe Boxes for hanging items such as shirts, dresses, pants and curtains.
  • Mirror Boxes for framed art and mirrors. Use bubble wrap to separate items to avoid rubbing and to protect glass. Mark as fragile. Store on edge, not flat.
  • Dish Pack Boxes for china, glassware, stemware, and lampshades. Extra thick sides and partitions will protect items during a move. Mark as fragile.
  • File Boxes for records storage.

Clearly label and date all boxes on sides and top to avoid having to open boxes when searching for an item. Get a good legible marker. Make an aisle so you can get to boxes in back.

Be sure not to make the boxes too heavy! Always check the weight of a box before sealing it to ensure easy movement.

Number and keep an inventory of all your boxes for future reference.

Fill boxes to the top to prevent boxes from leaning when stacked.

Make sure you have sufficient tape, mattress and sofa covers, bubble wrap, dish pack inserts, packing paper and rope to finish the job.

To avoid crushing the contents of a box, pack heavier items at the bottom.

Use original boxes for smaller appliances, electronics and TV's whenever possible. Otherwise use specialized durable boxes and pack carefully using bubble wrap. Mark as fragile.

Do not pack or store perishable items or hazardous liquids or items in a storage unit. Please respect other tenants and dispose of these items as required by law.

High value, delicate and irreplaceable items should be kept in specialized storage.

Taking a photographic or video record of your goods is a great way to keep a complete inventory of your belongings.
